Did you know that Holy Trinity Lutheran Church was one of the 12 Raleigh congregations whose members founded Urban Ministries of Wake County 30 years ago? Urban Ministries is a non-profit human-services organization that alleviates the effects of poverty in Wake County by meeting needs for food, shelter and health care. This year Urban Ministries will serve 24,000 diverse families and individuals. Urban Ministries delivers its services with a lean staff while keeping expenses low – 94 cents of every dollar contributed to the organization goes to client services.

Holy Trinity has been a wonderfully faithful partner with our agency and we look forward to continued work together. Each month bags of food are collected and brought to the Urban Ministries’ Food Pantry. Last year, the congregation collected over THREE TONS of food for hungry families in Wake County! The congregation also provides meals on the fifth Fridays of the month to the women’s shelter and supports that organization through financial contributions.

In these hard economic times, demand for the services offered by Urban Ministries has been staggering. In Wake County, one of every nine people lives in poverty. The agency will touch the lives of thousands of people this year through its programs: the Open Door Clinic, Crisis Support/Food Pantry, and the Helen Wright Center for Women (a homeless shelter and transitional-housing program).

Urban Ministries Offers Three Core Programs

The Open Door Clinic provides primary medical care – without charge – to uninsured low-income adults who reside in Wake County. The Clinic provides care to those suffering from chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and asthma, and offers full pharmacy services, also without charge!

The Food Pantry and Crisis Support Service help to alleviate hunger and food insecurity for families, children, seniors and persons with disabilities by providing at least one-weeks’ worth of groceries. The Urban Ministries’ Food Pantry is one of the largest in Wake County. Last year, 8,000 families – including 9,000 children – were served by the Pantry! The Crisis Support Service provided social-work counseling and referrals to 10,000 families and individuals in crisis last year. Vouchers are also provided for people who cannot afford prescribed medication. The Job Link program within the agency helps unemployed and underemployed job seekers with resume writing, job readiness classes and access to job training and supportive services.

The Helen Wright Center for Women provides shelter, security, and the foundations for rebuilding their lives for homeless women. With a capacity of 36 women nightly, the facility houses about 300 women annually. Having met the basic need for shelter, these women can, with the help of a case manager, deal with the financial, legal, emotional and health issues that caused their homelessness.

These are difficult times for folks who have very little. In addition, the agency needs your prayers, financial support, and volunteers to keep its programs operating.
