The mission of Stop Hunger Now is to end hunger in our lifetime by providing food and life-saving aid to the world's most vulnerable and by creating a global commitment to mobilize the necessary resources.
Stop Hunger Now envisions a world without hunger. Based in Raleigh, SHN stages meal-packaging programs in 19 cities in the U.S. and in South Africa, Malaysia, India, Italy and the Philippines. They have engaged over 500,000 volunteers in these events.
The packaging process combines rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and a flavoring mix with 21 essential vitamins and minerals. The dry mix is funneled into small meal envelopes that are packed and shipped around the world to support school lunch programs and to provide food for those in crisis. The food stores well, it can be transported quickly, and it has a shelf-life of two years.
As of today, Holy Trinity has hosted two meal-packaging sessions for Stop Hunger Now, one in October 2013 and the second in February 2015. Donations by church members and friends paid for the cost of the food. For the two events combined, the congregation raised over $7,000 from a benefit concert, coffee sales, private contributions and help from Thrivent Financial.
Each packaging session was held in the church Fellowship Hall with about 60 enthusiastic volunteers working in assembly-line fashion for about an hour and a half. The result was a total of 27,370 meals packed and shipped to Guatemala and the Ukraine. Music and good spirits prevailed and everyone wants to do it again soon. Watch this website for upcoming events.
