PLM Families Together and Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church share a rich history of serving the community by helping families experiencing homelessness return to the safety and stability of their own homes. HTELC is one of seven Lutheran “member churches,” providing Board of Directors leadership and ongoing financial support. In addition, we are happy to count many HTELC parishioners as regular contributors to our mission.
The problem of homelessness for families is not something you’re likely to see on the street. Parents will do whatever they can to keep their children safe and sheltered—at a friend’s place, in a hotel, in their car, etc. But here in Wake County, the need is great. There are 2,400 homeless children in the school system.
The PLM Families Together Program is designed to reduce the length of time a family is homeless, reduce the potential trauma experienced by children and parents, and support each family in its return to permanent housing within our community. We do this by:
Meeting families where they are,
Beginning intensive support and mentoring services immediately upon program enrollment, and
Guiding families and providing short-term financial assistance as they make the move into sustainable homes of their own.
Some families live in our short-term apartments, while other families are “re-housed” directly into places of their own. Our Mentor Advocates (Masters-level Social Workers) work closely with each family to assess their immediate needs and financial situation, connect them with needed services, provide guidance, and most important, assist them in finding a home that they can afford. This supportive relationship continues for over a year to help ensure stability and increase the chance for success. We also offer Family and Children’s Enrichment services:
After-school tutoring and self-esteem building activities provide support for children during family transitions.
Inter-generational activities for whole families reduce stress and teach families how to care for and support each other.
Skill building workshops in financial management, employability, job seeking, landlord/tenant relationships, tenant rights, self-care, and more prepare parents to maintain their new housing.
